The Jackson City Council voted 6-1 to accept a contract from Waste Management, Inc., for curbside collection, during its monthly meeting at City Hall, Tuesday.
Waste Management, Republic, Waste Pro and Red River were the finalists for the contract that goes into effect after the existing solid waste contract expires July 31, 2021.
Ernest Brooks II was the lone ‘no’ vote, while Harvey Buchanan and Gary Pickens were absent.
Bulky waste will be picked up by the City of Jackson as opposed to the hybrid model from the previous contract.
Rolling carts will be provided for citizens to place their garbage in at each residential unit.
Carts must be placed in front of the house – and on the curb. Pickup from the carport, back door, front of residence or garage will only be available for residents who apply and qualify for ‘disabled service status’ as determined by the city.
“If someone has a hardship, they can apply for what’s known in the contract as disabled service status that will be determined by the city,” Alex Reed said, “We’re still working on the applications, and we’re going to get those out there as soon as possible, because sooner is better than later.”
Reed – special assistant to Jackson Mayor Scott Conger – said for those who qualify for the service will be able to have their waste picked up from their garage or carport.
City Councilman Paul Taylor said he believes the best provider has been selected.
“There has been a lot of talk about us entering into this with the same provider we’ve had, and there was a lot of discussion today about how do we keep (Waste Management) accountable,” Taylor said, “… this is on the city to manage this better (and) I think we’ve put in the correct specifications … ultimately we’ve got to better managing our contracts.
“We’ve been saying that for two years, and this is an opportunity to start over on this particular point.”
