Burglary Suspect Hides In A Refrigerator to Avoid Arrest

MADISON Co. (April 21, 2015) Madison County Sheriff’s deputies take a suspect out of one cooler and put him in another.

Here’s what happened. Around 4:15 Tuesday morning Madison County Sheriff’s department received a burglary alarm call at 123 Oxford Drive.

Deputies got on the scene and say they saw tracks leading up to the residence.  They followed the tracks to the rear of the residence and found the back door opened.

Deputies say they cleared the residence and noticed a TV appeared to be missing.

According to deputies, they found tracks leading across to the neighbor’s yard at 214 Oxford Drive.

Deputies say they went to front door and knocked.  They say nobody would answer but they could hear people inside the residence . The deputies ran a residence check and learned there were two outstanding warrants for Justin Gibbs of that address.

Deputies say that eventually a female answered the door who was identified as the stepmother of Gibbs, the subject with warrants.

According to deputies the stepmother allowed a search and told them Gibbs was there but she was not going to tell them where.

A search of the residence was conducted.

While in the kitchen one of the deputies noticed that all the food on the counter should be in the refrigerator. The deputy opened refrigerator and located the subject curled up in the refrigerator gasping for breath

Deputies estimate Justin Gibbs had been hiding in the refrigerator between 30 and 40 minutes.

Madison County Sheriff John Mehr said Gibbs thanked deputies for getting him out and  Mehr added “He was sweating because he was out of breath, they probably saved his life”

The case remains under investigation.
