A news release issued Wednesday morning by Brownsville Mayor Bill Rawls states that his office is conducting internal and external audits of city government’s finances. The release doesn’t say why the audits have been undertaken, but in earlier statements Rawls pointed to recent revelations about the town’s financial.
Rawls expressed surprise more than two weeks ago when he learned the balance in the General Fund had been significantly depleted.
In City Hall’s statement, Rawls says he has “instituted a spending and hiring freeze based on initial findings showing inaccuracies on financial statements.”
“The anticipation Note that MTAS recommended at the City Board on Tuesday, July 10th, was based on unaudited and unreconciled statements. Those numbers are being reviewed,” the statement says.
“Mayor Rawls asks the citizens of Brownsville to be patient as the city, not the media, brings forth accurate facts, figures and financial statements.”
The mayor has called a special meeting of the Brownsville Board or Mayor and Aldermen (for tomorrow) Friday morning at 9am. The agenda includes discussion about the town’s financial condition.
