Brevin Knight, the color commentator for the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association, will be the guest speaker when the 38th Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame is held at 6:30 p.m., at the Carl Perkins Civic Center, Thursday, April 11.
Drae Bowles, Audrey Hazlehurst-Davis, Greg Goff, Joe Holloway and Joshua Holmes are the newest members of the Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame.
Mike and Jan Kelley will be the recipients of the 2024 Billy Schrivner Distinguished Service Award.
Knight, who was born in Livingston, New Jersey, was raised in East Orange.
Knight played nine seasons in the National Basketball Association, following a college career at Stanford University, where he is the school’s all-time leader in assists (780), steals (298) and third all-time in scoring with 1,714 points.
A first round selection – 16th overall – by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1997 NBA Draft, Knight led the league in steals per game and was named to the NBA’s all-rookie first team.
A three-year started for the Cavaliers, injuries curtailed his career, which ended as a member of the Utah Jazz in 2009.
He played for the Memphis Grizzlies from 2001-2003.
In 1991, he helped lead Seton Hall Prep to a state basketball title.
SHP repeated as state champions in 1992 and 1993, and Knight earned all-state honors.
Perhaps it was his height – or lack of it – he didn’t receive much attention from Division I recruiters.
But being 5-10 didn’t deter him from his books or leadership abilities to sign with Stanford, where he helped lead the Cardinal to three NCAA berths his final three seasons.
He was named Stanford’s MVP his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.
