Application made for $1.25 million grant to continue road work near Kroger on North Parkway

While the City of Jackson waits for the go-ahead that would rebuild one mile of Airways Boulevard from West Lafayette at King Tire down to the U.S. Highway 45 Bypass, there’s already another project in the works.

Jennie Keel, TLM Associates CEI Supervisor, said there are two phases to the project that targets North Parkway.

“We’re here today to accept public input on a TDOT multi modal grant we are applying for, for the City of Jackson,” said Keel at City Hall, Wednesday, “This will be a Phase II project … last summer the City of Jackson was awarded Phase I on North Parkway from Kroger (Lynnwood Place) over to the Health Department (which) has already been awarded, and this year we we asking for money to pick up at Kroger and continue east to Campbell Street.

“So today (we are) talking about the project and the City of Jackson would be awarded – or announced the winners – next year, around January or February.”

Due to inflation, Keel said the original amount to complete the project has increased to $1,250,000 from $1 million.

In April, Keel said if a federally competitive grant was approved, a one-mile stretch from West Lafayette Street and Airways Boulevard to the U.S. Highway 45 Bypass would receive an extreme makeover.

The $24 million Raise Grant would be for a full replacement of Airways Boulevard – the driving lanes, new sidewalks, landscaping, lighting and bike lanes – a full reconstruction from the dirt up to rebuild Airways Boulevard.

Jackson is expected to learn if the City has been selected for the grant on September 12.
