Appeals Court Rules Over Renaming Forrest Park

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee’s Court of Appeals has ruled that a Memphis chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans can sue over the renaming of three Confederacy-themed parks.

The appeals court ruled Friday that the Sons of Confederate Veterans Nathan Bedford Forrest Camp No. 215 has standing in its lawsuit against the City of Memphis.

The suit was filed by several plaintiffs, including Forrest’s relatives, after the City Council passed a resolution on Feb. 5, 2013, to change the names of Forrest Park, Jefferson Davis Park and Confederate Park.

A Chancery Court judge then dismissed the lawsuit, saying all the plaintiffs did not have standing.
