Greater Jackson Chamber receives $187,500 TVA Workforce Invest Grant to strengthen local workforce childcare access

JACKSON, Tennessee — The Greater Jackson Chamber, in partnership with the Madison County Government, has been awarded a $187,500 Workforce Invest Grant by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to support collaborative efforts in identifying childcare gaps and implementing strategies to increase the number of available childcare slots.

“In Madison County, there are over 13,000 jobs in the manufacturing sector, and often, a lack of available childcare is mentioned as a barrier to employment,” said Kyle Spurgeon, President & CEO of the Greater Jackson Chamber. “Industry cannot be successful without an available workforce. Because TVA also recognizes the clear link between childcare, employment and industry growth, we are thankful for their investment in our community’s planning efforts with the TVA Workforce Invest Grant.”

In response to the increasing demand for a trained workforce by business and industry, TVA, along with third-party consultant VisionFirst Advisors, developed an innovative initiative, known as Workforce Invest, in 2022. The goal of the program is to address critical workforce development needs.

The Countywide Childcare Assessment & Implementation Project aims to complete a comprehensive childcare assessment to understand the current childcare availability, affordability and accessibility, along with gaps in service. Third-party interviews with existing providers, working parents, national providers, businesses and industries will help provide the roadmap for the comprehensive report.

Once completed, the implementation strategies will include increasing childcare slots for a growing population, collaborating with higher education partners for credentialing and certifications to support existing childcare providers and conducting a regulatory review.

Cyber Insurance – What it covers and why it matters

Caleb Meriwether, Producer & Principal @ Haven Insurance Partners, visits with Dan Reaves, host of ‘The Dan Reaves Show,’ today, and each Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., to discuss all things insurance.

Cyberattacks are no longer limited to large corporations. Families, small businesses, and even individuals are frequent targets of hackers, scammers, and ransomware. A cyber insurance policy can help absorb the financial and legal fallout — but not all policies are the same.

Personal Cyber Coverage

Personal cyber insurance is designed for individuals and families. It typically covers online fraud or theft, identity restoration after a breach, data recovery if files are lost or corrupted, and even cyberbullying or reputational harm.

Common exclusions include business-related losses, voluntary payments made to scammers, and older breaches that occurred before the policy began.

When reviewing your coverage, make sure it includes protection for ransomware, social engineering scams (where you’re tricked into transferring funds), and legal or PR support to repair your online reputation.

Commercial Cyber Coverage

For businesses, cyber policies generally include two main parts:

  • First-Party Coverage protects your company’s own losses from a cyberattack — such as forensic investigations, system restoration, lost income, ransomware demands, and PR costs.
  • Third-Party Coverage protects you from lawsuits, regulatory fines, and liability if customer or employee data is exposed.

Typical exclusions include acts of war, intentional employee misconduct, or voluntary wire transfers that aren’t covered under a social engineering endorsement.

When shopping or renewing, look for key features like business interruption coverage, contingent business interruption (for vendor or cloud outages), system failure coverage, and strong limits for ransomware and data restoration.

The Takeaway

Cyber coverage is one of the fastest-growing areas of insurance — and for good reason. Whether you’re protecting your family or your company, the right policy can mean the difference between recovery and ruin after a breach.

Business Spotlight – Darlette Samuels appointed to Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer at JSCC

JACKSON, TENN. – Following sustained growth the last two consecutive years, Jackson State Community College (JSCC) has added to its ranks a Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer (CSIO) to reinforce the forward momentum of the college. This role was developed to assist in the forecasting of trending opportunities, support the procurement and reinforcement of partnerships, and to develop initiatives that drive student success while supporting the economic vitality of West Tennessee.

In the fall of 2024, JSCC set enrollment records across the state, boasting the highest first-time freshman and total enrollment percentage increases of any public college or university in Tennessee. Since then, the college has continued to see double-digit growth across many sectors, and the addition of the CSIO role will focus on keeping the College’s long and short-term vision at the forefront while navigating continued future growth.

“Jackson State has experienced a lot of success over the past two years,” said Dr. Carol A. Rothstein, President of Jackson State Community College. “While this is cause for celebration, it is also a pivotal moment for us to look toward the future and think strategically about innovation, long-term growth, and sustainability so that we are the best we can be for our students and the West Tennessee Community. As we embark on the creation of a new strategic plan to chart our future success, I felt that this was the perfect moment to implement this new role.”

Darlette Samuels, a respected higher education leader with more than three decades of experience in advancement, fundraising, and community engagement, has been selected to serve as the College’s inaugural Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer. In this role, Samuels will serve as a strategic advisor to the president, reinforcing initiatives to foster and support innovation on campus, cultivate strategic external partnerships, assist with capital campaigns and athletics fundraising, as well as stay abreast of emerging trends in higher education and workforce development to help shape proactive institutional strategies.

Samuels has dedicated her career to advancing opportunities for students and strengthening the institutions that serve them. At Lane College, she held multiple leadership roles—including Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Chief of Staff—where she played a key role in securing significant philanthropic support for the institution, cultivated alumni and corporate partnerships, and helped position the college as a trusted community partner. Her work demonstrates the kind of innovative leadership JSCC envisions for this new role.
