3 convicted in Tennessee Waltz sting have rights restored

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Three former elected officials convicted in the FBI’s Tennessee Waltz bribery sting have had their rights to vote and serve on a jury restored, but they cannot run for public office or own a gun.

The Commercial Appeal reports that (http://memne.ws/2fYFahb ) former state Sens. John Ford and Roscoe Dixon and former Shelby County commissioner Michael Hooks Sr. received judicial orders this month restoring their right as citizens. All three had served time in federal prison.

Dixon and Hooks discussed the challenges of having their civil rights restored at a press conference in Memphis on Monday.

Dixon says more work needs to be done to draw attention to the process for restoring voting rights “once they’ve paid their debt to society.”

The FBI sting netted 12 lawmaker, lobbyists and local officials.
