Man Charged with Vehicular Homicide

The Tennessee Highway Patrol has released the name of the man charged in
the death of TDOT employee, James “Pee Wee” Hopkins.

According to THP 78-year-old James (Tommy) Greene was driving westbound on
State Highway 88 near Brims Road where road workers were present.

Officials say Green failed to observe signs when he struck Hopkins
throwing him nearly 30-feet before landing, James Hopkins died as a result
of his injuries.

Greene is charged with his third DUI offense, vehicular homicide and due
care law. He has been released on a $100,000 bond. He is scheduled to be in
court on September 29 at 1:30 p.m

The Tennessee Department of Transportation is mourning the death of the
63-year-old Hopkins.

TDOT James “Pee Wee” Hopkins was working near a maintenance crew when he
was struck by Greene’s oncoming vehicle.

Hopkins had worked for the department since 1996. He is the second TDOT
worker to be killed on the job in three months.

Transportation Commissioner John Schroer urged motorists to slow down and
minimize distractions. In his words: “The lives of our workers depend on
it.”

Hopkins is the 111th TDOT worker to have died working on Tennessee
roadways since 1948.
