Officials Seek Moratorium on Achievement School District

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Metro Nashville Public Schools has joined Shelby County officials in calling for the Achievement School District to discontinue takeovers of struggling schools.

The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/1Q9ZjdU) reports the Metro School Board approved a resolution on Tuesday seeking a moratorium on the ASD and asking the state to abolish the entity and replace it with a model like the Shelby County Innovation Zone.

The goal of the ASD is to move the bottom 5 percent of schools in Tennessee to the top 25 percent in five years. The state-run district is composed of 29 schools — 27 in Memphis and two in Nashville — and has about 10,000 students.

ASD officials have said the district had a slow start in its first two years, but that it had successful third-year results.
