Young Killers: Why Are They Killing?

Part 3 of the “Young Killers” series.

We know youth crime is not new. Decades ago, adults were using kids as numbers runners and drug couriers. Punishment was not as harsh on a juvenile, and the kid was not as likely to try and steal the client.

In recent years youth violence has been escalating at a tremendous rate. Go to your search engine and research mass murder. You will find many young people involved in these tragedies.

Experts point to many factors that may be causing the increase in serious violence:

  • The use of mind-altering drugs. It seems we have moved from “Just Say No” to “Just Be Careful.”
  • The availability of a weapon.
  • Violent movies and video games. Perhaps death ceases to be seen as real when victims show up alive and well in the next episode.
  • Unwillingness to accept the consequences of his actions.
  • Lack of respect for authority. Authority figures may be seen as enemies.
  • No fear of sanctions.
  • Immediate gratification from her peer group.
  • Learned behavior that tells him violence may be the best alternative to accomplish desired changes in his life.
  • Dissolution of the nuclear family.

Most of us are familiar with a young person headed in a bad direction. Think about that kid for a minute, and you may see some of the above mentioned factors in his life. Keep in mind almost anyone experiences one or two of them.

Many folks like violent movies, and most people I know can get a hand on a weapon.

However, a person exhibiting several of these traits may deserve attention.
