The Care Center breaks ground on The Genesis Homes

In less than thirty days, construction will begin on safe and affordable housing for women and children in transition. Whether women have served jail time, are pregnant, or are trying to escape drug abuse and other obstacles, the Care Center has one goal with three names: Rescue. Redeem. Restore.

Nathan and Susan Young moved into the original house in 1992 and over 31 years have provided a ministry for over 4,300 women and children. The new Genesis Homes will be built next to the current location at 351 North Liberty Street in three phases. Women will be charged rent based on their income. “The highest they’ll ever have to pay is $120 a week which will include rent, utilities, internet, and some food. They will learn to budget, pay bills and be accountable”, says Nathan Young.

Initially, there will be six bedrooms with room for either two women or a woman and her children. Young says the ultimate goal is to build five more Genesis Houses on the property totaling 72 beds. “That’s a big dream, but we’re big dreamers and God is quite the visionary,” said Young.

The need is greater than one may imagine. Young recalls one client who came to the center with a history of drug use including painkillers, meth, marijuana, heroin, crack, ecstasy and others. She is now in college working on a degree and has a child. Young goes with the theory that the symptoms of drug and alcohol abuse can be treated but real hope comes when the pain that causes the abuse is addressed as well.

Care Center Board Member, Dave Bratcher, says it was not by accident that the homes will be called the Genesis Homes. The project will be a new beginning for women on their journey to independence. Bratcher’s father, Frank Bratcher was a board member for many years. When he passed away last summer, his son was asked to take his place. “He is looking down today and giving thanks because he was one of the ones constantly asking when ground would be broken. Well, dad, here we are. We’re breaking ground.” Bratcher said.
