BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Union University’s Brooklyn Verdugo was named the Gulf South Conference Women’s Golfer and Freshman of the Week.
According to a press release from Steven Aldridge – Union University’s Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Communication – this is Verdugo’s first GSC Golfer of the Week honor and second GSC Freshman of the Week honor this season. It was Union’s second GSG Golfer of the Week this season (Kallie Robertson, 3/9).
Verdugo, a 5-foot-3 freshman from La Habra, California, won her first collegiate tournament with a medalist finish at the Argonaut Invitational this week hosted by nationally ranked No. 22 West Florida. She posted scores of 73 and 72 for a two-round total of 145, 1-over par. She was in first place for the entire tournament, leading for all 36 holes. Her first and second-round scores were both the top scorers for each round. This was Verdugo’s third straight top-10 finish and fourth in her last five events.
Union’s second place finish was the third of the season, all coming in the last five events. Union shot 633, +57 (314, 319). West Florida, ranked No. 22 in the nation, won the event with 608, #22 (308, 300). Union defeated Christian Brothers (3rd), Loyola University (4th), Spring Hill (5th), Evangel University (6th).
Union Nicole Taylor finished T16 with +18, 162 (80, 82), Cecily Berry 21st +20, 164 (79, 85), Kallie Robertson T22 +21, 165 (82, 85), Aubrie Cable T24 +22, 166 (84, 82), Karlie Alexander 29th +25, 169 (84, 85, and McKinnley Korte +33, 177 (91, 86). Alexander and Korte both played as individuals.
Up next for Union will be the GSC Championships April 16-18 in Mobile, Alabama at the RTJ GolfTrail at Magnolia Grove.
