Haywood High student dead after shooting Friday; 2 arrested

HAYWOOD, Tenn. (WMC) – Two teenagers have been arrested after shooting and killing a Haywood High School student near the Haywood-Lauderdale County line on Highway 19 on Friday night, according to the Haywood Sheriff’s Office.

According to WMC TV Memphis, the student was in a car with three friends traveling from a Haywood vs. Ripley basketball game in Ripley, Tennessee, around 10 p.m., when someone from another vehicle started shooting at them.

The vehicle was struck multiple times by gunfire.

The victim, 17-year-old Christine Michael, was in the back seat and was struck by one bullet in her lower back.

According to the Haywood Sheriff’s Office, a 13-year-old passenger in the same car had a minor shrapnel injury. The driver was not injured.

On Feb. 11 at approximately 5 p.m., Haywood County Sheriff investigators and deputies arrested 18-year-old Kevin Davis on Bell Street in Brownsville in connection with the murder of Michael.

Davis has been booked in the Haywood County jail with no bond and held on first-degree murder charges.

On the same day at 6:30 p.m., a 16-year-old was arrested on Scott Street in Brownsville in connection to the Feb. 10 murder.

He will be held in detention by juvenile court officials for first-degree murder. He also has no bond.

Additional charges of three counts of attempted first-degree murder will be sought on each defendant, according to Haywood Sheriff’s Office.
