‘This is not a typical call for service’ – JPD Chief of Police gives update on child found in dumpster

A newborn child found in a dumpster at 33 Carver Street, Thursday, has been transferred from the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to another unnamed medical facility to receive advanced care.

“I am absolutely convinced, if not for the joint efforts of these First Responders and medical personnel the newborn baby in this case would not have survived,” said Thom Corley, Jackson’s Chief of Police, “This is not a typical call for service for First Responders who made the scene and the traumatic effects which come along with such an experience (which) can be long lasting.”

Corley made his comments during a press conference at the Jackson Police Department, Friday.

At approximately 4:15 a.m., on January 19, officers with the JPD were dispatched to the area of 33 Carver Avenue in reference to a newborn baby boy that was located in a nearby dumpster.

“The mother of the infant has indeed been identified, our investigators are working in partnership with the Department of Children’s Services and the District Attorney’s office,” Corley said, “The investigation is still ongoing.”

Corley, who said the mother of the child is being treated for “medical issues that come long with giving birth are being addressed,” thanked those who assisted in providing life-saving medical care for the newborn.

“I want to take this opportunity to publicly thank the collaborative effort of our JPD officers, personnel from the Jackson Fire Department, Medical Center EMS, Jackson-Madison County General Hospital Emergency Room and their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit,” Corley said, “… the traumatic effects which come along with such an experience can be long lasting.

“We’re going to make available the appropriate resources including trauma, debriefing, counseling, and our department chaplain to help address our concerns.”

Under State Law, there are options to surrendering newborn children at Fire Stations, Police Departments and hospitals. If you or someone you know is struggling with making this type of decision, please consider the aforementioned options or the the hotline 1-866-99BABY1.

“I would like to publicly thank the community for the outpouring of thoughts and prayers for the child involved in this case,” Corley said.
