Tenn. (AP) — A judge has raised the idea of trying to connect deadbeat parents with temp agencies looking for workers.
Knoxville Juvenile Court Judge Timothy E. Irwin sees the idea as a way to keep parents from being put in jail for not paying child support. He says it would give parents a chance to show good faith by working with a temp agency.
Irwin has approached Knox County Sheriff Jimmy “J.J.” Jones with the idea. Irwin says staff is looking into which temp agencies would participate.
He says putting those parents to work would sidestep the expensive litigation process once a parent is held in contempt for not paying child support.
Family law attorneys have complained about prolonged jailing of deadbeat parents as nonsensical and harsh.
