WRAP to ‘Shine Light on Strangulation’ with awareness campaign, today

WHO: WRAP – Wo/Men’s Resource & Rape Assistance Program – is a non-profit agency that provides trauma informed supportive services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and their families.

Services are free and confidential and include a 24/7 helpline, counseling, safety planning, safe homes, hospital and court accompaniment, advocacy, and resource linkage. WRAP serves 19 counties in West Tennessee.

WHAT: WRAP will be shining a light on the dangers of strangulation, today. Joining WRAP will be representatives from the Jackson Police Department, among others, prior to the National
Night Out Block Party hosted by the Safe Hope Center and the Lambuth Area Neighborhood Association. The Block Party will be held from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.

WHEN: Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 4:30 p.m.

WHERE: Safe Hope Center, 512 Roland Ave., Jackson, Tennessee.

WHY: October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and as part of WRAP’s efforts, they are launching an awareness campaign on the dangers of strangulation. Nationally, one in four women and one in seven men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.

Of those, one in ten will experience choking or strangulation by their partner or loved one.

Strangulation is one of the most severe and dangerous forms of abuse.

Victims of just one strangulation are 700 percent more likely to become a victim of attempted homicide, and 800 percent more likely to becoming a victim of homicide by the same partner in the future.

As part of this campaign, WRAP has developed an informational brochure that not only provides information on the dangers of strangulation, but will allow them to track symptoms, chart injuries and to notice the danger signs that could signal the need for immediate medical treatment.

In the City of Jackson alone, the Jackson Police Department has averaged around 150 reports of strangulation per year. Given the high risk of future lethality, WRAP believes it is important to help the
community understand those dangers and to be equipped with information that could save their lives.
