THP Trooper, McKenzie native, dies in Marion County helicopter crash

Tennessee Highway Patrol helicopter pilot Sgt. Lee Russell was among two that died Tuesday in a helicopter crash in Marion County.

The crash happened when the 206 B Bell Jet Ranger chopper piloted by Russell hit a power line and crashed on Aetna Mountain, located alongside I-24 near Chattanooga.

Marion County Sheriff’s Department detective Matt Blanset was also killed in the crash.

Russell was a McKenzie native and graduate of the University of Tennessee Martin.

“While the investigation is ongoing, please give the families their privacies,” Tennessee Highway Patrol Captain Travis Plotzer said during a Tuesday press conference. “Today is a very tragic day for law enforcement.”

Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
