Julie Powell rejoins Union University athletics staff in administrative role

JACKSON, TENNESSEE – Julie Powell returned to the Union University athletics staff in the summer of 2022 as the Assistant Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Success and Senior Woman Administrator.

According to a press release from Steven Aldridge – Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Communication – she will continue in her role as a Professor of Sports Management at Union, a position she has held since 2000. Powell also currently serves as an adjunct Graduate Online Professor of Sports Management with Liberty University.

Union Director of Athletics, Tommy Sadler said, “We are excited to have Dr. Powell returning to our athletic program. She has a great knowledge of student-athlete experiences and I feel she will be a tremendous leader in our department and with our SAAC program.”

As a part of her duties in athletics administration and providing support for student-athletes, Powell will also serve as the sponsor for the Student-Athlete Advisor Committee (SAAC).

Powell was first a member of the Union athletic department staff from 1995-2000 as the Sports Information Director, the school’s first full-time SID.

Powell graduated from Union in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education. Just a year later, Powell completed a Master of Education in Physical Education from Union in 1994. In 2009, Powell received a Doctor of Education in Sport Management and Leadership from North Central University.

During her time as SID at Union, Powell won numerous awards including an ADDY Gold Award in 2000, first place in NAIA Publications Contest with best cover (baseball) in 2000, women’s basketball brochure in 2000, and women’s basketball brochure in 1997. She added two second place finished in the contest with baseball brochure and website in 1998. Powell was very active in the NAIA, serving in many coordinator roles, national tournament roles, and held several positions on the NAIA-SIDA board including National President before leaving the SID profession.

During her early years at Union, Powell served two years as the Director of Intramurals from 1995-97. She worked as the TranSouth Conference Website Coordinator from 1999-2002.

Powell has had numerous articles and essays published locally, regionally, and nationally. In addition, Powell has been asked to speak or present at numerous organizations on leadership and generational research.

Powell from Munford, Tennessee where she graduated from Munford High School (1989). She is the daughter of Russell and Phyllis Powell, and sister of Diana.
