City of Jackson, JPD introduces initiative against gun violence; getting guns out of hands of juveniles, criminals

By Julie Cooke – Grace Media Group

The City of Jackson has launched an initiative against gun violence aimed at getting guns out of the hands of juveniles and criminals.

It’s called ‘Blue Impact,’ a multi-faceted effort by the Jackson Police Department that will include patrol officers and special units along with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department and state and federal law enforcement officers.

According to JPD Chief Thom Corley, since April 22, 2022, the patrol division alone has recovered 26 firearms that were either involved in crimes or guns that were being possessed unlawfully.

Corley said many of those were in the hands of juveniles.

During a press conference at police headquarters, Corley added that recently two sixteen-year-olds were arrested in possession of a 9mm handgun with additional magazines totaling over 40 rounds.

Chief Corley would not give specifics of Blue Impact, saying details would be detrimental to the operation.

‘Blue Impact; is designed to concentrate on specific criminal behavior, identifying, locating, and arresting offenders involved in gun violence.
