John Collins, Tommy Dean, A J Merriweather, James Parker and Jennifer Moore Wilkerson became the five newest members of the Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame, and Mike and Pam McCarty received the 2022 Billy Schrivner Distinguished Service Award when ceremonies were held at the Carl Perkins Civic Center, Thursday.
Jerry Reese, who went from small town Tiptonville in northwest Tennessee to a 24-year career in administration with the New York Football Giants, served as guest speaker during the 36th event.
“It’s an exciting time for these inductees, and for some young people who are getting scholarships,” Reese said before the ceremony, “I’m just going to give them a peak into what my path was to get to the Giants, but we’re celebrating the inductees – so it’s about them – and we’re excited about that.”
Addressing the crowd, Reese discussed the highs and lows of his association with the Giants that included two Super Bowl titles – XLII and XLVI.
“If you want to be in a leadership position, you have to able to face some criticism,” said Reese, who would serve as senior vice president and general manager of the Giants, “if you can’t take criticism – don’t be in a leadership position.
“There were a lot of highs and lows in my career with the Giants, there were some good times, there were some tough times, but you learn from both of those things … when you are on top you learn some things, when you are on the bottom … failure is a really good teacher.
