Union University athletics – softball, volleyball updates

Union softball takes weekend series after 3-2 win over Delta State

JACKSON, Tennessee – The Union University softball team earned a 3-2 victory over Delta State University Sunday at Fesmire Field. Union improved to 13-19 overall and 7-11 in the Gulf South Conference.

Delta State dropped to 18-15 on the season and 8-8 in league play. The win for Union clinched the series for the Lady Bulldogs.

Union and Delta split the Saturday doubleheader with Union winning 5-2 in game one and DSU taking game two, 7-3. Union’s Reese Taylor (5-5) earned the win with six innings of work, allowing two runs, one earned on seven hits with four strikeouts and zero walks.

Laken DiStefano (3) earned the save, getting the final three outs after entering the game with two runners one in the seventh. She struck out the side to seal the win, leaving the tying run at third base. This was after a season high 11 strikeouts in a complete game win Saturday for DiStefano.

Bryleigh Carneal led Union with two hits, while six other Lady Bulldogs had one hit each.

Up next for Union will be a doubleheader with Trevecca Nazarene at home, at 2 p.m., Wednesday.

Union softball splits with Delta State in Saturday doubleheader

The Union University softball team earned a doubleheader split Saturday at Fesmire Field. Union won the first game 5-2, then fell 7-3 in the second game. Union moved to 12-19 on the season and 6-11 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State improved to 18-14 on the season and 8-7 in league play.

Union adds graduate transfer, Hegg, to volleyball roster

The Union University volleyball program has announced the addition of Sidney Hegg to the 2022 fall roster. Hegg will join Union as a fifth-year senior/graduate student, playing her COVID season with the Lady Bulldogs.

Union head coach Darrin McClure said, “We are excited about Sidney and the valuable experience she brings. She is a phenomenal player and fits the culture of the team perfectly.

Hegg, a 5-foot-11 graduate student, transferred to Union from the University of Southern Indiana where she played four years of volleyball.

The middle hitter/blocker helped lead Southern Indiana to the Great Lakes Valley Conference title in 2021. Hegg earned Baden GLVC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week and the Sportsmanship Award in 2021.

She was also named Academic All-GLVC three times. In her career, she played in 107 matches, with 121 digs and 329 blocks. Off the court, she was named to the Dean’s List for four years, earned the English Department’s Literature Award, Outstanding Future Educator Award, and was co-President of Fellowship of Christian Athletes for two years.
