Union softball takes final game at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Union University softball team won game three of the three-game series at the University of Montevallo this weekend. Union won game three 8-7. In the doubleheader Saturday, Montevallo topped Union 3-2 and 20-2. Union is now 10-16 on the season and 4-8 in the Gulf South Conference. Montevallo moved to 14-11 overall and 6-4 in league play.

In the third game Sunday, Montevello scored twice in the first. However, Union exploded for eight runs in the second inning. Macy Neal started and ended the 8-run rally. She got the scoring started with a solo home run and then drove in the final two runs of the inning with a double. Morgan Jennings, Baylee Stewart, and Mackenzie David also had RBI hits in the inning. Union made those eight runs hold up as Olivia Baker (4-4) earned the win with 4.2 innings of work with five strikeouts. Reese Taylor tossed a third of an inning, and Laken DiStefano (2) pitched two innings of no-hit ball for the save. Neal led Union with three hits and three RBI.

Saturday’s first game, Jennings and Idalia Alarcon led with two hits, while Bryleigh Carneal had Union’s only RBI. Distefano (1-5) took the loss in a complete-game effort, allowing three runs, with six strikeouts, six walks, on just four hits.

In game two, Union did not score until the sixth inning on RBI singles from Stewart and Fallon Groves. Taylor (4-4) took the loss, tossing 3.2 innings with three strikeouts, six runs, four earned on seven hits. Kira Finkley tossed two innings of relief.

Up next for Union will be a 3-game road series at Christian Brothers, March 26-27. Union’s midweek road games at West Florida have been canceled due to expected rain in Florida this week.

Union baseball drops road series to Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Union University baseball dropped an away Gulf South Conference series against Montevallo University this weekend. Union lost the first game 5-14, the second game 1-5, and the third game 5-15. Union moved to 8-13 overall on the season and 3-8 in the GSC. Montevallo improved to 19-6 overall and 6-5 in league play.

In game one, Union was led by Grayson Swanson going 2-4 with a home run and three RBI. Josh Bozoian also had a home run in the game. Patrick Music and Britt Netterville went 5-2 in the contest. Luke Williamson started on the mound for the Bulldogs, he threw four and two-thirds innings earning eight strikeouts. He allowed six runs on six hits with four walks. Dylan Thomas, Stuart Edge, and Jake Jewell all threw in relief. They combined earned three strikeouts and allowed eight runs on five hits and nine freebies.

In the second game of the Saturday doubleheader, Union was led by Music who went 2-3 with a double and a walk. Blake Barrett scored the lone run for the Bulldogs when he homered in the sixth. Sam McMillin started on the mound for Union. He threw four and two-thirds innings earning two strikeouts, he allowed five runs on four hits and seven walks. Ryan Evans threw in relief throwing an inning and a third.

Game three, Union was led by Trey Frierson who went 2-3 with a walk. Bozoian went 2-4 with a home run and three RBI. Dorian Berry went 1-3 also with a home run. AJ Zeak started on the mound throwing three and a third, he allowed three runs on two hits and four walks. Jack Rasmussen and Ryan Middleton threw in relief.

Up next for Union is a single non-conference game on the road against the Trojans of Trevecca Nazarene. This game is set to take place Tuesday, March 22 at 6:00 p.m.
