Union women’s basketball reaches No. 1 national ranking in 2 polls
JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women’s basketball team is ranked No. 1 in the both NCAA D2 National Polls entering the national tournament.
Union holds the top spot for the first time this season in both the WBCA Coaches’ Poll and the D2SIDA Media Poll.
The last time Union was ranked No. 1 in the nation was 2018-19 which Union reached the top spot in both national polls in December and early January. This also marks the latest in the season that Union has been No. 1 in the nation since joining the NCAA in 2012-13.
Union has won 23 straight games on the season, including a perfect 18-0 to win its eighth GSC Regular Season Title.
Union also swept through the GSC Tournament, winning its fifth title and third straight in the league.
Union has also been ranked No. 1 in the three NCAA D2 Regional Rankings, earning the Lady Bulldogs at No. 1 seed and host for the 2022 NCAA D2 Women’s Basketball National Championships South Region. Union will open the region tournament Friday, March 11 at home at 5 p.m. versus the No. 8 seed Savannah State University.
Union baseball defeats Harding 12-3
JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team defeated Harding University 12-3 in a non-conference matchup Tuesday afternoon at Fesmire field. Union improved to 10-7 on the season, while Harding fell to 8-9 overall.
Jake Baker, Dorian Berry, and Trey Frierson led Union with two hits each. Patrick Music led the team in RBIs with four.
Sam Poindexter earned the win for the Bulldogs throwing six innings earning five strikeouts. He allowed three runs on 5 hits and three freebies. Ryan Evans and Billy Beckham both pitched in relief.
Up next for Union is a three-game conference homestand against Valdosta State University.
The first game of the series will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 12.
Union men finish sixth at Buccaneer Spring Classic
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Union University men’s golf team posted a sixth place finish at the Buccaneer Spring Classic hosted by Christian Brothers University.
The 3-round event was played at the Irene Golf and Country Club, featuring eight teams and 48 golfers.
Freshman golfer JJ Zimmer led the Bulldogs with a third place finish, shooting 213 (72, 70, 71), just two shots behind the winner.
CBU’s Benjamin Boquete was medalist with a 211 with the help of a tournament best second round of 65.
Zimmer’s third round of 71 matches the best in the round.
Union women’s golf earns fourth at CBU Buccaneer Spring Classic, Robertson third
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Union University women’s golf team posted a fourth place finish at the Buccaneer Spring Classic hosted by Christian Brothers University.
The event featured seven teams with 37 golfers and was played at the Irene Golf and Country Club.
Union’s Kallie Robertson was named all-tournament after finishing third overall.
She fired a 232 (78, 77, 76) which was just four shots behind the medalist, Nuria Llobet of Christian Brothers.
Up next for Union will be the Rogers State University Invitational in Owasso, Oklahoma March 14-15.
