Health Department celebrates National Nutrition Month

JACKSON, Tennessee – The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department joins the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in recognizing March as National Nutrition Month. We encourage people to make informed food choices and develop healthy eating and physical activity habits.

This year’s theme, Celebrate a World of Flavors, promotes eating a variety of nutritious foods every day as well as planning and creating healthy meals each week.

The health department will provide healthy snacks on Fridays in March at The WIC Center. We will also celebrate Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day on March 9.

“Our bodies can’t operate without food. Nutrition is our energy source,” Bonita Webster, RD, said. “What we eat determines how well our body operates and how we feel. Make sure you’re fueling your body with a healthy diet that includes fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.”

The health department employs one nutrition educator and four registered dietitians at The WIC Center. They provide individual and group nutrition counseling, breastfeeding counseling, and determine supplemental food needs. Nutritionists conduct child development checks, nutritional health screenings, and referrals.

WIC provides healthy foods for low-income pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants, and children until age five.
