JACKSON Tenn, (August 13, 2015) – The Jackson-Madison County School Board approved a motion that added a permanent life insurance option to benefit offerings for employees and denied a charter school application at their meeting Thursday.
The board stating they were following the recommendation of their committee denied Connections Preparatory Academy’s charter school application. This was a re-submission of an earlier application which was denied in June.
Superintendent Verna Ruffin, gave a transportation update as part of her superintendent report. She told the board, “the district has the opportunity to learn from congestion they are experiencing with transportation”. She called the transportation issue a work in progress,” Ruffin said. “We still have some things that we have to address and we are cognizant of that.”
Jeff Head gave a technology update, he said the committee is waiting on E Rate funds before proceeding with decisions but they are reaching out to get options on laptops including better warranty and more rugged computers. He said the biggest issues they were experiencing was battery life problems and damage due to cracked screens.
Board members heard from the custodial and grounds keeping contracting service GCA Services . The representatives were there to answer questions about complaints of grass not being cut on schedule. Schools are on a 14-day rotation for grass cutting and according to representatives they are meeting the twice a month cutting schedule on all schools, however they said it is difficult and required some 12 hour days.
