
JACKSON Tenn (July 24, 2015) – The Jackson Center For Independent Living (JCIL ) marked the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) with a celebration.
Friday’s celebration recognized some who have made commitments to the betterment of the community by supporting and calling attention to the services of JCIL.
News Talk 101.5 FM host Steve Bowers is recognized with the JCIL “Community Making A Difference Award.”
Steve has been involved with JCIL for many years. His connection goes back to Glenn Barr, who was also in radio at one time.
Through Steve’s involvement with the Optimist Club he helped promote the Center’s Interpretive service programs. Glenn and Steve, along with Greg Wood, WNWS, started the News Talk Disco Ball. The award also acknowledges the countless hours Steve used his radio show to promote and educate the public about the services provided by the Jackson Center For Independent Living.

After the presentation Steve said, the work being done at this center in important to all of us. If you want people with special challenges to become independent it is not enough to tell them you have to help them. That is the kind of assistance JCIL provides.
Bowers said , this award is much appreciated and is attributed to Glenn Barr. Because of his challenges he found a way to do something with what he had which in many ways is the same thing we are all faced with.
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) is a law that was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1990. The ADA is a wide-ranging civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability.
JCIL is a non-residential, program of services to enable persons with disabilities to fully participate in all aspects of community life. JCIL was established in 1996 and is part of a nationwide network of non-profit organizations operated by people with disabilities for people with disabilities.
