CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — President Barack Obama says the U.S. will keep doing everything in its power to protect American military members after last week’s killing of five troops in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Obama is speaking to the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Pittsburgh. He says the U.S. honors the four Marines and one sailor killed.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — The Southern Conference and ESPN agreed on a six-year contract through the 2020-21 academic year. The network will continue to broadcast the Southern Conference men’s basketball championship.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — A senior federal law enforcement official says that though investigators are continuing to dig into the background of Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, they have not found any evidence suggesting that he was “specifically tasked” by anyone to shoot up the military site in Chattanooga.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A task force appointed by Gov. Bill Haslam to look at prison sentencing is considering recommendations for longer prison terms. The Tennessean reports the enhanced penalties under consideration would boost the prison population in Tennessee by 4 percent over a five-year period, according to a report by Vera Institute of Justice that the newspaper has obtained.
