Business Spotlight – West Tennessee Bone & Joint Clinic, P.C. – surgeons perform 1,000 robotic surgery cases

West Tennessee Bone & Joint Clinic, P.C. is the first orthopedic clinic in the country to complete 1,000 robotics-assisted total joint surgery cases with the company Smith & Nephew.

These surgery cases are performed at Physicians Surgery Center and Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Jackson, Tenn., has more Smith & Nephew robots between these two facilities than any other area in the country.

The advantage of the robotics-assisted surgical system from Smith & Nephew is joint replacement surgery being accurate with better results, less pain and improved recovery.

“Robotic assistance in total knee replacement has allowed us to perform a much more precise surgery, said Dr. David Johnson, a Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon with West Tennessee Bone & Joint Clinic. “Using this technology, I am able to collect very precise information about the quality and function of the ligaments of the knee – information that X-rays and even MRI cannot give us. This information is used to position the components of the new knee so it can function in the most natural way.

“I know that using robotic assistance has greatly improved the outcomes and satisfaction of my patients with faster and better recovery of motion and function.”

Unlike other robotics-assisted platforms, the Smith & Nephew system does not require a pre-operative CT-scan. Instead, the surgeon collects patient-specific data during the procedure to build a 3D model of the patient’s knee. This is used to further plan the surgery.

At this point, a handheld robotics-assisted tool is used to position robot-specific cut guides exactly as intended, based on the patient-specific data previously collected. This extra layer of precision and accuracy is designed to enable optimal implant placement for better patient outcomes.

West Tennessee Bone & Joint Clinic, P.C. is the largest and most comprehensive orthopedic practice group between Memphis and Nashville with the mission of “Keeping You Active.”

The clinic offers a complete array of expert care that includes interventional pain management, complex hand surgery, diagnosis, imaging, surgery, physical and occupational therapy and an ambulatory surgery center.

Offices are located in Jackson, Paris, Dyersburg, Huntingdon, Lexington, Martin, Trenton, Selmer, Savannah and Union City. To make an appointment or for more information, visit www.wtbjc.com or call 888-661-9825.
