Griffin Swinea rushed for 284 yards and scored four touchdowns as Davidson Academy defeated University School of Jackson, 53-35 in the TSSAA Division II-A state championship football game at Tucker Stadium in Cookeville, Thursday.
USJ jumped out to a 21-6 lead in the first half on touchdowns by Steele Haynes with an 11-yard run; a 33-yard pass from quarterback Andrew Smith to Tyke Tabor and a 6-yard run by Myles Mayo, but four turnovers – three fumbles and one pass interception – proved to be the undoing for the Bruins.
The Bruins took a 21-19 lead into intermission, but a Jared Vetetoe 43-yard touchdown pass to Kelvi Rice gave Davidson Academy (13-0) a 32-29 lead with 3:52 to play in the third quarter, and the Bears were on their way to their third straight Division II-A state title.
USJ (10-3) totaled 313 yards total offense – 87 yards rushing and 226 passing.
