MADISON CO, Tenn. (June 26, 2015) – Madison County can now provide marriage licenses to same-sex couples
Software has been updated and Madison County is ready to issue the same license to man and woman or same-sex couples. Madison County Clerk Fred Birmingham said the update consists of changing the information field. Instead of “Bride” and “Groom.” it reads “Applicant 1” and “Applicant 2″.
The format now complies with the Tennessee vital records.”
Tennessee was on of 14 states affected by a Supreme Court ruling which said states had to allow same-sex couples to marry.
Governor Bill Haslam released a statement on the supreme court’s decision Friday saying, “We will comply with the decision and will ensure that our departments are able to do so as quickly as possible.”
Birmingham said no applications have been handed in yet.
