Protesters want Lauderdale County sheriff out of office for using racially offensive word

A Memphis TV station is reporting that a social media post making the rounds yesterday depicts Lauderdale County Sheriff Steve Sanders using a racially offensive word.

The sheriff admitted to a Channel 3 reporter that it “just slipped out” and apologized.

Peaceful protests began yesterday in Lauderdale County and, according to Channel 5, there is an event planned Saturday – a march from the sheriff’s department office to the sheriff’s house.

Protesters are calling for Sanders’ resignation.

The reports state Sanders has been sheriff in Lauderdale County for 16 years.

In another AP story today, officials say a Washington County sheriff’s deputy was fired from his job after he said authorities should have “opened fire” on anyone who acted violently during protests against the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
