A petition delivered to the Madison County Election Commission for the purpose of holding a recall election in School Board District 4 for the position held by Doris Black – has hit a snag.
“The staff of the election commission has concluded its count and has found 967 valid signatures,” said Kim Buckley, administrator of elections, “This is 184 less than the 1,151 signatures needed to call an election on the question of whether to recall Doris Black as a school board member.”
Kim Franks, who is spearheading the effort to recall Black said she is not deterred.
“We’re not concerned,” Franks said, “We kind of knew some of the signatures would not be valid, but right now, I’m holding 51 petitions in my hand.
“We’re going to keep working, and it’s not a matter of if we will obtain enough signatures – it’s when.”
Black, who received 1,743 votes in the Aug. 2, 2018 election – could not be reached for comment.
The 1,151 signatures required is 66 percent of the vote Black received, and the required number of signatures needed for a recall.
Some of the reasons some of the petition were ruled invalid included a husband or wife signed for their spouse, a change of address, some voters not in the right district and duplicate signatures.
Buckley said the Election Commission will meet in the Election Commission Office, 311 North Parkway at 10 a.m., Friday, to evaluate the number of valid signatures on a petition turned in Friday, Sept. 6.
“The members of the Madison County Election Commission are expected to sign a certificate which will indicate that the amount of names filed is insufficient,” Buckley said, “From that point, the filer has 10 days to file the amended petition which must contain the additional signatures required.
“If the meeting is held as scheduled and the certificate of insufficiency is signed, then the deadline to file the additional signatures will be Monday, September 23 at close of business – which is 4 p.m.”
