Artis Hicks – enthusiasm remains for this ‘Memphis Tiger for life’

For Jackson’s Artis Hicks, it’s the best of both worlds.

A standout offensive lineman at the University of Memphis, Hicks is making his annual trek to the University of Memphis Lambuth campus to watch the Tigers prepare for the 2019 football season.

“Memphis Tiger for life,” Hicks said, “I love coming out every year to the (UofM) Lambuth campus, when the Tigers come down for training camp. “I like to come out and be around football again, work with a couple of guys and interact with these coaches … this is my life – I’ll always be this guy.”

The Tigers are visiting the UofM Lambuth campus for the fourth consecutive year.

Practice continues today, and a scrimmage – free to the public – will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday.

A graduate of Jackson Central-Merry High School, Hicks played football at the University of Memphis before signing with the Philadelphia Eagles as a free agent in 2002.

With Philadelphia, he started in Super Bowl XXXIX against the New England Patriots.

He also played for the Minnesota Vikings, Washington Redskins and Cleveland Browns.

But it’s the Memphis Tigers that commands his attention – and enthusiasm.

“They are getting outside the city (of Memphis), and this is helping with recruiting, helping with exposure,” Hicks said, “They are coming east, and it’s a matter of time, we’ll have (practice) in Knoxville, soon.

“Best team in Tennessee … Memphis Tigers.

“I can’t wait for the Tigers to get rolling and rack up a bunch of wins.”

Memphis opens its 2019 season at home against Ole Miss, August 31.
