MADISON Co. (April 20, 2015) – Monday night the Madison County Commission approved the sale of two lots on Southern Street in east Jackson to Southwest Human Resources Agency,
Patti Pickler with the agency told the commissioners Southwest Human Resources has plans to build two homes for low to moderate income families.
Commissioners approved two items that required matches from the city.
Damaged  railroad crossing off Madison Technology Drive which separates BlueScope Buildings North America, Inc. and Carlisle factories repair is being shared by the two bodies.
In last month’s meeting commissioner were told the county Highway Department was not allowed to fix the problem because the drive is surrounded on every side by the city.
The two agreed to contract an outside company to do the work. Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris said work has been completed. The bill is about $6,700 each of the city and county.
In other business the commission approved $12,500 to replace a tornado siren for the county’s Emergency Management Agency located on a tower at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital .
According to Mayor Harris, the siren is currently on top of the hospital. The mayor said it is decades old and it can only be repaired by crane which is expensive.
EMA director Marty Clements said the new siren will go right beside the tennis courts in Conger Park.
In other business
The commission approved $600 to hang new commissioner pictures and to purchase more office supplies.
Commissioners approved a tree planting grant  Madison County Park and Recreation Department that requires a $9,500 match from the county.
$425,000 was approved for the Madison County Highway Department  to be used for asphalt and gravel.
Regional Inter-Faith Association received $3000 from the county to make up a short fall in their school backpack weekend food program.
The Jackson-Madison County School System was awarded another $15,000 for the Healthier U.S. School Challenge Award. The award will give additional fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains for 12 schools in the district.
