The concern of what Gloria Sweet-Love called a racist Facebook post by law enforcement officials in McNairy County is not good news for the area, or the state of Tennessee.
“I’m concerned, because Tennessee is touted by our Governor (Bill Lee) and our officials all over the world as being such a great place to live,” Sweet-Love said, “But when you have an incident such as this, where sheriff’s deputies and police officers are talking about exterminating a whole race of people like we were rodents, like we are outgrown grass around then, it shows bad on the state, so I think it needs to be seen everywhere.”
Sweet-Love, president of the Tennessee State Conference NAACP, was referring to a Facebook post of what she called discriminatory remarks by Selmer Police officer Ronnie Pilkington, and McNairy County deputy Mike Shipman, who ‘liked’ a racist post shared by Bryan Petty, a court appointed lawyer stating “colored people are like human weeds and are to be exterminated.”
Sweet-Love made her comments following a press conference at Jackson City Hall, Wednesday.
“This is an issue we need to make sure there is racially sensitive and diversity training to all law enforcement,” Sweet-Love said, “And, as I say I will be contacting POST (Peace Officer Standard Training) to say that it ought to be an issue, and one of the things they train in.
“Anytime an officer has some issues then what they should do is make them come back and recertify in that area, or remove their certification, because it is uncomfortable, very uncomfortable to think about, because you’ve got people carrying a gun with authority than think we ought to be exterminated.”
