Inside Union athletics – Bulldogs, Lady Bulldogs honored by Conference

Here’s an update on athletics at Union University.

Union’s Martin named GSC, TSWA Player of the Week

Union University’s Morgan Martin received the Gulf South Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honor for the week ending February 18. This is Union’s sixth GSC player of the week honor this year, all going to Martin. Martin was also named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week. This is the second TSWA weekly award for Union women’s basketball this season, both going to Martin.

Martin, a 6-foot-2 guard from Davenport, Iowa, helped Union to three Gulf South Conference wins.

Martin scored 28 points with 21 rebounds in Union’s win over Christian Brothers. The 21-rebound game was fourth best in a game in Union program history. She added 26 points to Union’s 95-74 victory over Montevallo, and 14 points against West Alabama. On the week, she shot 75% from the field, going 24-for-32, and averaged 23 points and 12 rebounds per game.

Union’s Kelley named GSC Softball Freshman of the Week

Union University’s Kaitlyn Kelley received the Gulf South Conference Softball Freshman of the Week honor for the week ending February 18, 2019. This is her first GSC weekly honor and first for Union this season.

Kelley, a 5-foot-7 utility player from Lexington, was instrumental in three wins in the Columbus State Classic last weekend. Kelley had a .462 batting average this week, going 6-for-13 at the plate with four runs and seven RBI. Five of her six hits went for extra bases including three doubles and two home runs.

Union is 7-6 on the season and open Gulf South Conference play with a series at Delta State, February 23-24.

Union cross country teams, individuals earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

The Union University cross country has earned numerous academic honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Both the men’s and women’s team earned the USTFCCA Academic Team Awards, while five individuals earned all-academic honors.

Union’s women, who finished with the highest team GPA in all of NCAA DII in 2016 and 2017, posted the third highest team GPA for 2018 with a 3.76. The team was just 0.01 point behind the top team. The Union men’s team posted the fourth-highest team GPA in all of NCAA DII with a 3.57.

Union individuals named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team including Ronald Ayabei from the men’s team, and Amanda Leatherwood, Jackline Ruto, Brinley Schenk, and Rebecca Tankersley from the women’s team.
