It was fun, but still competitive, when the Top Spinners, an affiliate of the Jackson Table Tennis Club – hosted the Sharon Table Tennis Club, in north Jackson, Thursday.
With 30 people participating, mostly Seniors, The Top Spinners slipped past their visitors in doubles play – 35-32.
“It’s good cardio and great exercise,” Lawrence Taylor said, “Doctors recommend it, and I wear my watch which counts my steps … about six- or 7,000 during the two-and-a-half to three hours.”
Better known as the ‘King of Ping,’ Lawrence said the club was founded in 2011, and membership presents an international flavor.
“We have members from the United States, China and India,” said Lawrence, a retired Jackson businessman, “We play matches in Jackson, Sharon, McKenzie, Nashville and Memphis.”
When it comes to equipment, there’s no cutting corners.
The club purchased German-made top-flight Stigal tables, and uses top-shelf white Butterfly Ping Pong balls.
Members are no strangers at the Tennessee Senior Games, held yearly in Franklin.
“We are well represented from this area in the Senior Games … very well represented,” said Bill McDaniel, a 10-year club member, “I don’t thing anyone can match the number of medals we’ve won in the last decade.”
Open to all ages, Lawrence said if you are interested in playing, give him a call at (731) 695-2234.
