Special Delivery – ‘Blue Strong 5’ takes to the streets for National Law Enforcement Day

The men and women who protect and serve are being served by ‘Blue Strong 5,’ which is delivering what is called an “avalanche of goodies, sweets and treats,” during Law Enforcement Day, today.

The program began locally in 2014 when Jacksonians Ann and Bill Luther were concerned about the national trend to disrespect law enforcement nationally and approached Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist with an idea to show local support.

“The first three years an event of appreciation was held at the Carl Perkins Civic Center, and this is a way we are letting (officers) know we are behind them, and praying for them,” Bill Luther said, “If you serve under a blue light, people will  be delivering goodies and treats all day today to every shift change at their station.

“Because of the shift changes, this will continue on Friday, because we want everyone to be recognized – to let them know they are appreciated.

“This is also to encourage people to use blue lights on the outside of their homes and businesses … at least through January 31.”

Mary Jo Bell chairs ‘Blue Strong 5,’ and volunteers will try to make every shift change in the 24 hours from early Wednesday to midnight.
