Preparations are underway for National Law Enforcement Day will be held in Jackson, Wednesday.
According to a press release ‘Blue Strong 5’ will provide an avalanche of “goodies, sweets and treats,” to the men and women who wear the badge and protect the citizens of Jackson and Madison County, instead of holding the event at the Carl Perkins Civic Center.
This began locally in 2014 when Jacksonians Ann and Bill Luther were concerned about the national trend to disrespect law enforcement nationally and approached Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist with an idea to show local support.
Tammy Buchanan, who was serving as the Administrative Assistant and City liaison for Jackson mayor Jerry Gist, was instrumental in organizing the first event with food and a prayer service at the Carl Perkins Civic Center with the public invited to participate.
In the follow years, the event has grown to include a showing of blue lights and an outpouring of support from local restaurants and other groups.
Mary Jo Bell chairs Blue Strong 5, and volunteers will try to make every shift change in the 24 hours from early Wednesday to midnight.
City residents are encouraged to display blue lights until Jan. 31, and churches are involved by remembering and praying for law enforcement.
