Dr. Vicky Foote, Jackson City Councilwoman – District 1 – has announced she will not seek re-election in May 2019, but is in an exploratory phase for the position of Mayor of the City of Jackson.
“People have been asking me to do this for months, and I’ve been thinking about this four- or five weeks,” Foote said, “Right now, I don’t want to make any public announcement.”
During January, Foote will assess feedback from voters, and make an official announcement of her intentions in early February.
Foote said the vote to build a new Madison Academic High School and Jackson Central-Merry during the Council’s December meeting was the deciding factor to encourage her to make run for Mayor.
I don’t want people to think I’m against schools, but we have our priorities out of line,” Foote said, “We have some tendencies to borrow money for things other than basic necessities. I’m not surprised the vote to move Madison to the University of Memphis at Lambuth campus passed, but it did concern me.”
Foote, David Cisco and Randy Wallace voted against building a new $11.5 million high school on the campus at the University of Memphis Lambuth.
“I don’t know where the other candidates stand,” Foote said, “Moving Madison to the University of Memphis at Lambuth is a good thing – but this will cost us in the long run. We’ll have to raise taxes or cut services.”
Dr. Jerry Woods, an educator, Jimmy Eldridge, a State Representative from Jackson, and Scott Conger, president/CEO of the United Way of West Tennessee, have announced they will seek the position of Mayor of Jackson.
Mark Johnstone, a Jackson businessman, announced the formation of an exploratory committee to help evaluate the possibilities of running for the office.
