Three buildings were leveled, new utilities were added and the storm water flow was modified on North Highland Avenue, between East and West Deaderick Streets for a new Roundabout, which only needs a few minor details to complete.
“There’s some landscaping that remains,” said Jerry Gist, mayor of Jackson, “And, if you are traveling south on North Highland, on the right hand side of the Roundabout, there will be a bench and a bust of Jonas Kisber, who was a pillar of this City.”
Locals will probably remember Jonas Kisber, now deceased, who was the owner of Kisber’s Department Store, and a member of the Tennessee Board of Regents.
“Jonas was a permanent member of ‘Uncle Billy’s Breakfast Club,’ that meets everyday at 7 a.m., at the Bakers Rack,” Gist said, “He recited poetry for those remaining, and one morning he forgot the next line, and those who were still there harassed him (Gist said laughing).”
Gist said Mr. Kisber left the restaurant, and headed north on Highland Avenue, and remembered the line he forgot.
“He made a U-Turn in the middle of North Highland Avenue at East and West Deaderick Streets, the site of where the Roundabout is,” Gist said, “He returned to the Bakers Rack … Jonas was an outstanding citizen, and we thought the recognition would be appropriate.”
Gist said the dedication will be held in April, 2019, the month Mr. Kisber was born.
