Man wanted for murder of a child shot & killed while warrant was being served

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man wanted in the death of a 1-year-old child was shot and killed while a warrant was being served late Wednesday morning.

U.S. Marshal’s were serving a warrant when a man was shot and killed by a deputy U.S. Marshal around 11:30 a.m.

We are told the man was armed with a knife, and was told repeatedly to put the knife down before he was shot.

The shooting happened in the 3800 block Vernon near Wrenwood Street.

Sheila Turley was on scene Wednesday morning said she is the aunt of Markell Atkins. She claims he was the man who was shot.

In May, 2014 police say 1-year-old Tremaine Black was brought to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital with signs of aggravated child abuse.

Black, who later died from his injuries, was being watched by Atkins at the time the injuries took place.

Atkins was wanted for first-degree murder in perpetuation of a felony to wit: aggravated child abuse/treatment and first-degree murder in the perpetration of a felony to wit: aggravated child neglect.

Turley said Atkins should have never been wanted and said Black’s death was a mistake.

“That little boy that died, it was an accident, he didn’t do it on purpose. I heard he had just set the baby on the counter and stepped away for a second and the baby fell off the counter,” she explained.

Another aunt on scene said she did not believe Atkins was armed with a knife and that there were children in the home at the time of the shooting.

Now the family of Atkins says they want answers from law enforcement.

WREG checked and Atkins has at least three pages of recorded run-ins with the law.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Authorities say a man was fatally shot when a U.S. Marshals fugitive task force served a warrant at a Memphis home.

U.S. Marshals Service spokesman Seth Bruce said a deputy U.S. marshal and officers with the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force were involved in a fatal shooting Wednesday.

Bruce said no officers were injured in the shooting. He referred further questions to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the lead agency in the investigation.

Neither the TBI nor the Marshals Service has released the identity of the man who was killed. TBI said his name will not be released until the medical examiner completes an autopsy.

Officials have not said whether the shooting victim had a weapon
