Jackson State Baseball – Feeling Good in February!

After splitting the twin bill with Northeast Mississippi Community College on Saturday Coach Tyson Malik says he feels good about where the Generals (5-2) are at as a team early in the season. Listen to our full conversation here:

After being shutout through 6 innings in game 1 on Saturday Feb. 18th, the Generals put two runs on the board in bottom of the 7th with Brayden Barnes at first and a homerun from Jackson State third baseman Alex DeRiggi. The Generals couldn’t keep up the momentum and fell to the Tigers 7-2.

In game two of the doubleheader Jackson’s bats stayed cold against Tiger’s ace Jake Christa, rated by Perfect Game as the No. 29 overall prospect and the No. 14 right-handed pitcher from Alabama. Christa was perfect through 4 innings. The Generals got on the board in fifth with base hits from Garret Guymon and Josh Frantz who would both come around to score after a walk and two consecutive batters being hit by pitches.

In the bottom of the seventh Jackson rallied together 3 runs with two base hits and two defensive errors to earn the win. DJ Wright hit a ground ball to second with two outs and pinch runner for Ian Bibiloni at third. The ball was dropped at first base to allow the walk-off win and final score of 5-4.

The Generals are on the road today with a doubleheader against the Rangers of Northwest Mississippi Community College. Conference play for Jackson starts on March 2nd at Walter’s State.
