Jail Escapees Cause A Shutdown Downtown Friday Night

(December 14, 2014) JACKSON, Tenn. – Madison County Sheriff John Mehr confirms there was a situation Friday night involving two escape inmates at the Madison County Courthouse. According to Mehr, the call came in around 11 p.m. The incident shutdown North Highland at East Baltimore for about an hour.

Sheriff Mehr said, two inmates assaulted two female jailers inside the Annex, which is located at the Madison County Courthouse. According to the sheriff, the guards were trying to retrieve an item from a cell when the two inmates, juveniles charged as adults, Mehr said, overpowered the guards using fire extinguishers.

The inmates, were apprehended still in the courthouse late Friday night. One of the escapees was able to make it to the roof, where he was taken into custody. and the other was found hiding in a courthouse closet.

Inmates who were sharing the cells didn’t try to escape, Mehr said.

Mehr said the jail Annex has capacity for 110 inmates and about 65 were currently being housed there.

Mehr said housing the juveniles at the annex was necessary because of overcrowding at the jail in Criminal Justice Complex.

According to the Sheriff both inmates will now face additional charges. He would not release their names.

The guards were transported by ambulance to a local hospital and later released. Mehr didn’t release any information on the injuries but said both are at home and were recovering.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation.
