City Council Approved Two Projects at Monthy Meeting

JACKSON Tenn — Jackson Madison County Schools abandoned the former West Jackson school on McCowat Street after deeming it unfit for education. The local school board surrendered the building back to the city leaving its future up to the council.

Councilman Scott Conger said “It is our priority to assure the safety of the citizens of Jackson. That assurance includes dilapidated buildings around residential areas. We want to make sure children are safe in their neighborhoods, so a decision was made to tear down the abandoned West Jackson school.”

The school has been boarded up for safety concerns and has issues of asbestos. Mid-South Business Construction bid approximately $146,000 to remove the asbestos and demolish the building.

The council also approved a new website construction. According to mayor Jerry Gist the site will be completed by Sodium Halogen and Younger Associates. Gist said the site should be completed by the end of January or early February.

Updates will allow residents to pay traffic tickets, taxes and other fees online. Funding for the city to have a new website was approved unanimously..
