UT’s woes didn’t just start with Butch Jones

A lack of wins at the University of Tennessee has fans of the football program calling for a new coach.

Afterall, Butch Jones is into his fifth season at UT, and combined with a 3-4 start this season, he is now 33-25, overall.

While it is easy to understand the frustration at this football mad school, the issue was in existence at UT long before Jones was introduced as head coach in 2013.

Since 2005, and including this year, the Vols have won 85 – and lost 73.

But here’s a few more statistics during the same period that are even more alarming – especially against teams generally in the upper tier of the Southeastern Conference.

Following Saturday’s 45-7 loss at Alabama – its 11th straight to the Tide – the Vols now trail 55-37-8 overall in the series – and there’s more.

Against Florida, the Vols, won once led the series 15-7, have lost 20 of the last 25 games with the Gators and now trails the series 27-20.

Against Auburn, the Vols have lost six straight games since 2003 and trail 28-21-3.

Tennessee enjoys a 25-9-2 advantage over South Carolina, but since 2005, the Gamecocks have won SEVEN times.

The Vols play LSU in Knoxville, Nov. 8, and while the two schools do not play on a regular basis, UT holds a 20-9-3 lead in this series, but Tennessee has lost six of the last eight times they have played against the Tigers.

Against Georgia, the Vols lead 23-22-2, but the Bulldogs have won eight of the last 13.

Jones is not the only one to blame for UT becoming, should we say irrelevant, but he is the engineer of this train that is on a fast track to nowhere.
