Motorists Urged to Stay Home as Winter Weather Affects Area

(March 3, 2014) Jackson, Tenn.- Snow and ice have accumulated on the roads in Jackson and West Tennessee.

Officials are urging residents to stay home and only travel if necessary. The TDOT Smartway map shows multiple roads covered with patches of snow and ice.

If you must go out onto the roads, TDOT advises that you slow down, regardless of what type of vehicle you drive.

TDOT also advises that you leave plenty of space between your vehicle and others, and that when you brake, brake early, brake slowly, and brake correctly. Never slam on the brakes.

Slow down when approaching intersections, off-ramps, bridges or shady spots as well. TDOT says that these are all candidates for developing black ice, which is a thin coating of clear ice that can form on the pavement surface that may be difficult to see.

TDOT has more information on winter weather driving, including tips on driving when there’s a snow plow out, HERE.
