(February 12, 2014) Jackson, Tenn.- The State Emergency Operations Center has declared a Level 3 State of Emergency.
The Level 3 State of Emergency was called due to the winter weather situation that is developing across the state.
Emergency managers from counties that border Alabama and Georgia, from Memphis to Chattanooga, are reporting icing conditions and winter precipitation.
Tennessee Emergency Management Agency reports that these slick conditions caused two accidents this morning; one in Memphis and one in Chattanooga.
TEMA says that the cold air and winter precipitation is expected to build northward throughout the state today and make ice and snow covered roads into Thursday morning.
TEMA has the following tips for staying alert and informed:
> Hazardous traveling conditions are a concern.
> Avoid unnecessary travel during severe winter weather
> Travel Safely – Ice & Snow; Take It Slow!
> Call 511 before traveling into areas affected by severe winter weather to check on hazardous roadway conditions
> If you become stranded or are in an accident, stay with your vehicle.
> Call 9-1-1 or *THP (*847) if you get stranded.
> Monitor local radio and television broadcast, and NOAA Weather Radio, for updates on weather conditions,
