DA Says He Won’t Further Prosecute Former Sheriff

ERWIN, Tenn. (AP) — The state prosecutor in Erwin says he won't press charges against former Unicoi County Sheriff Kent Harris.

Three previous trials of Harris have ended with no convictions, the latest coming last month.

District Attorney General Tony Clark told the Johnson City Press it was time to move on.

Still untried were charges of evidence tampering and attempted aggravated assault. They are two of the 10 felonies a Unicoi County grand jury charged Harris with in October 2011. Also remaining is a single count of official misconduct, which Harris was indicted on in February 2012.

Clark said he had no confidence another trial would produce a different result.

Harris said Tuesday afternoon that he is innocent of all the charges against him and that Clark "did the right thing."
